1000 MILE SPONSORED BIKE RIDE IN AID OF SAILABILITY
Published 17:27 on 16 Jul 2026
Retired local GP and long-standing Exe Sailing Club member Mark Nicholson is setting out on July 19th to cycle from Land's End to John O'Groats. The 1000 mile journey will take 2 weeks to complete averaging 70 miles each day and Mark has very kindly agreed to use this ride to raise much needed funds for Sailability. Mark says, "I have always wanted to undertake this challenge and it is great if I can also use it as a way of raising money for such a worthy cause as Sailability."
Last year Sailability at Exe Sailing Club was presented with the Kings Award for Voluntary Service in recognition of the amazing work it does in providing sailing and boating opportunities to the disabled and disadvantaged, both young and old, living in our local community. For most of our sailors it is life enhancing and for some even life changing. But all this costs money. Sailability is self-funded and while it shares some resources with the Sailing Club for which it contributes it receives no funding from the Club. It has to raise at least £20,000 each year to keep the project afloat and our sailors safe. Money comes from charitable grants, sponsorship, sailor contributions and fundraising events. This is the first time a sporting challenge has been used to try and raise funds so please do get behind Mark and Sailability and sponsor him on his epic bike ride. Every pound raised will go directly to Sailability and will make a big difference.
