The annual race to Brixham is this year renamed as the River Exe Champagne Challenge.  The event will be organised by Exe SC and will take much the same format as other years. It is being held on Saturday September 20th and we hope to have full details of this and entry forms available in early August.

01 Jun 08 - Art Exhibition Raises Funds for Sailability

ESCARTists at Exe Sailing  Club during Exmouth Festival

Preparations were underway a week before the festival began, painting the display boards, putting finishing touches to work and framing paintings. 118 entries including hand created cards, photographs, pottery and paintings were hung and displayed. Upwards of 100 visitors were welcomed over the 4 days that we were open to the public. £221.21 was collected, through sale of work and refreshments, to support the Sailability project at our club. Thanks go to all those who contributed their work, making an excellent display of a high standard, also to those club  members who came along and gave lots of encouragement during the week. Despite the dismal weather there was a bright colourful scene at the club!

26 May 08 - James does it again at the Honda Youth RIB Challenge

Seven Exe Sailing Club junior members took part in the regional finals of the RYA Honda RIB challenge on Sat 24th May against competitors from across the South West. The Royal Torbay Yacht Club hosted the event with the RYA providing the Honda-engined Ribcraft boats. Conditions were good, even if the sun was not shining, and the youngsters were not fazed by the long swell sweeping across the bay. The course was a mix of slow speed technical challenges, high speed dashes and a man overboard exercise to test the reactions of the drivers. The Exe Sailing Club swept the board in the 8-12 year old group with James Turl winning for the second year running with Jason Ianicello and William Rowsell taking second and third positions. Chris Turl also managed a creditable finish. James will now go through to the national finals that will be held at the Southampton Boat Show in September. In the 12-16 year old group Jordan Trick narrowly missed taking 1st position and the Club was well represented by Stephen Preston and George Shoulder who both recorded excellent times.

The Honda Challenge is run annually by the RYA and presents the opportunity for participating clubs to win a 4.5m Ribcraft RIB, trailer and a 50hp Honda outboard. Topsham Sailing Club took the honours in 2006 and it is now down to James Turl to rise to the occasion and win at Southampton in September (not much pressure there James!).

26 May 08 - Two Exe Cadets to sail in the Worlds

The third and last regatta used to select the seven Cadets that will represent the UK at the World Championships at Medemblik in Holland was held at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy at the weekend. Five boats from Exe Sailing Club made the short journey along the coast to join 90 other Cadets from around the country for a tense finale to the indicator series. Both Tom Kinver and his crew Jamie Proffitt and Alex Horlock and his crew Tim Pearce were in UK Team places prior to the event and needed to perform well to consolidate their places. On Saturday the wind blew a steady Force 6 from the East. Two races were held in conditions that were exhilarating for some and too taxing for many. Horlock and Pearce sailed the races of their lives to finish with a first and a third whilst Kinver and Proffitt stayed in the chase with a fourth and a sixth. George and Charlie Payne had two steady races in midfleet, whilst both Dom Langdon and Shaun Spring and Emily and Katie Kinver failed to finish one of the races.

Conditions couldn't have been more different for the Sunday when the breeze started as a Force 4 from the East but slowly veered round to the South and dropped to a gentle Force 2 before returning to the East late in the day. Horlock and Pearce made the most of the morning breeze to post an excellent 2nd with Kinver and Proffitt not far behind in 6th. As the breeze dropped Kinver consolidated his position with a further 5th and a 3rd in the last two races. Meanwhile Horlock and Pearce stuttered with a 35th and a 13th. Langdon and Spring sailed two excellent races in the light wind to record a 4th and an 8th whilst the Kinver girls had a tremendous 6th in the last race.

Kinver and Profiitt won the regatta by one point from Horlock and Pearce who were just one point clear of Joanna Freeman from Parkstone. Langdon and Spring were 16th, the Kinver girls 34th and the Paynes 60th.

Kinver and Proffitt won the UK Team selection series with Horlock and Pearce 5th and both boats were duly selected to represent Great Britain at the World Championships in August. This is the first time since the mid 1990's that Exe SC has had Cadets in the World Championship Team and is a great achievement for the young sailors concerned.

24 May 08 - Art Exhibition in the Clubhouse

As part of Exmouth Festival week, ESCARTists are holding a display of work for you to browse through and purchase. They are giving 10% of paintings and photos sold to Exe Sailing Club Sailability. There is coffee and tea available and the stewards are there from 1000 until 1600 each day starting today and ending on Thursday 29th. Come along and have a coffee for the funds at least.

25 Apr 08 - Nick Rogers and Joe Glanfield Win Gold in France

The Rogers and Glanfield Olympic 470 campaign is right on track with a win at the prestigious French Olympic Week regatta in Hyeres.  To quote from the official press release:

"The 470 men were the first one to start the Medal race's show in front the harbour in Hyères. The wind, light and shifty, forced the race committee to reduce the course to a single windward return. The French teams were leading the ten boats fleet and rounded the top mark in first and second, but the run proved costly. Athens Silver medallist, Nick Rogers and Joe Glanfield and New Zealanders Evans/Burling passed the French on the run. The British take first place with the last two jibes to the finish claiming the Gold medal and their second title at the SOF. Early regatta leaders, Sven and Kalle Coster placed 5th for Silver."

Congratulations!

In the same regatta, Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes suffered a series of catastrophic gear failures and were forced to leave the regatta early.  See their blog at http://www.sailblogs.com/member/stevieben/ for the details

15 Feb 08 - COTY Result

Frankie Upton has now heard from the RYA with the result of our Club of the Year application.  Unfortunately, we have not been shortlisted this time.  Frankie says

"They received a number of high quality applications and apparently it was not easy for the Awards Panel to select just five.

The Awards will be presented at 1630 on Saturday March 1st on the main stage at the RYA Dinghy Sailing Show, Alexandra Palace I have no idea who the other applicants were or who the five finalists are.

I think it was a good exercise to make the application and the effort all put in is certainly not wasted.  We need to build on this and the other work that has been started/is ongoing e,g, Management issues, OnBoard status, Club Pro etc.  If we get the chance I think we should see if we can get some feedback/talk to those clubs that were successful to see if there is any good practice out there to consider for our situation."

Definitely worth a go and many thanks to Frankie for putting it all together on our behalf.

20 Jan 08 - ICC Testing available at ESC

International Certificate of Competence

The ICC is required by many countries that do not recognise the RYA Dayskipper/Yachtmaster certificates (as they are strictly speaking only British certificates).  If you are asked to present documentation in a Foreign or EC port they may refuse to recognise anything except an ICC.

We now have RYA permission to run ICC tests for sailing craft (yachts) and will do so by arrangement during the sailing season.  The test consists of a short theory test and then a practical test afloat.  It should only take a morning or afternoon (providing that you are competent).

The test fee for ESC members will be £20 plus lunch for the tester, if you provide your own yacht.   The fee for doing the test in a yacht provided by the tester, or for tuition for the test, will be by negotiation.

Certificates will be provided by the RYA and are free to RYA members, otherwise £38.  Holders of certain RYA certificates may be exempt from the test and can apply direct for the Cert.

Those wishing to take the test should contact Rex Frost on 01392 661041

  • Five clubs will receive Awards and an overall winner will be identified.
  • Successful clubs will be notified in writing by early Feb 2008.
  • Three clubs will also be put forward to the Central Council for Physical Recreation ‘Sports Club of the Year’ Award 2008 which takes place early in 2008 and has a first prize of £6,000.

No prior knowledge is necessary.

The course also represents a first step towards the Day Skipper theory course.

The course length is 2 full days of instruction (0845-1730) and will be held on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd of March at Exe S.C.   The course fee is £60.
